A tusker was found dead near Bhadra backwaters in Lakkavalli Wildlife Range on Thursday. The Forest Department officials found the dead elephant, which was around 40 to 50 years old, with one of its tusks broken. The reason for the death is yet to be ascertained.

K.S. Chengappa, Range Forest Officer, on Friday, told The Hindu , “The post-mortem report might throw light on the reasons for its death. We suspect it had a fall and lost its right tusk, and died of the injury.”

Veterinarians were called in to conduct the post-mortem and the carcass was burnt later on Thursday. “The doctors have collected samples for further examination,” Mr. Chengappa said.
