Krishnagiri: A male elephant calf was found dead in the forests of Denkanikottai in Krishnagiri district on Sunday. Forest officials have initiated an inquiry into the death. According to forest officials, forests in Dhenkanikottai are frequented by elephants that often stray into agricultural land in neighbouring villages. The elephant carcass was spotted in one such village – Kodakarai – abutting the forests.

Villagers spotted the carcass before dawn and informed forest officials who, led by ranger Munusamy, visited the locality. The calf was estimated to be about three years old and did not have any external injuries. An autopsy was performed after which the carcass was buried.

The officers say that there was a possibility that the calf would have eaten mud leading to its death.
