KEONJHAR: A 45-year-old man was killed by a tusker in Keonjhar district on Thursday evening. The deceased was identified as Khaira Mohant of Baikala village under Patna police limits.

The incident took place around 6 pm when villagers were trying to drive away an elephant herd camping in a cashew field near Baiakala and Gunduripasi villages, 60 km from here. The tusker chased the man, lifted him in its trunk and dashed him against the ground. He died on the spot.

“The body was seized and compensation will be paid to his family,” said divisional forest officer (Keonjhar) R K Lenka.

Sources said 12 elephants, including a calf, entered the Patna forest range from Similipal tiger reserve in Mayurbhanj district, a few days ago.
