A wild elephant gave birth to a calf at Pollana in the Pathiri Reserve Forest Range on Wednesday night.
It was a Adivasi family who located the elephant and the calf first and on information, forest officials reached the spot. But on Thursday morning, the baby calf died and the mother and the calf could not be separated for many hours.
The mother elephant was trying to brush her trunk against her baby with sadness and affection. After post mortem, the carcass was buried.
