An elephant was knocked to death by a speeding train on Saturday in Walayar, bordering Tamil Nadu and Kerala, just days after another jumbo was killed in a similar incident on the outskirts.

The 10-year-old tusker was hit by Kollam-Vishakhapatnam Express while trying to cross the tracks in Walayar, seven KMs from here, railway sources said.

Under the impact, the elephant was thrown off the track, the sources said.

Forest department officials from Kerala reached the spot and took the carcass.

A 15-year-old elephant had died when Bengaluru-Kochuveli express hit it while it was trying to cross the track at Madukkarai near here on June 20.
