HAZARIBAGH: A herd of 17 elephants have destroyed more than 24 houses at Amnari and Dudhlia villages in Hazaribagh district, a government official said here today.

The herd, which had entered the villages 10 days ago, re-entered the areas last night and destroyed the houses and crops, Tati Jharia Block Development Officer Moni Kumari told reporters.

The villagers fled from their homes and tried to chase away the animals through beating of drums and bonfire, but the pachyderms destroyed property worth lakhs of rupees, the BDO said quoting the villagers.

Kumari assured the villagers that she would send a report to the Hazaribagh deputy commissioner and forest department for compensation.
