A Norwegian man has died from the injuries he sustained in an elephant attack during a safari in Malawi.

The man was described as an experienced safari leader who has led hundreds of safaris in Africa. The Haugesund native, who was in his early 70s, was also a nature photographer.

The accident occurred in mid-November, and the man has been receiving treatment at a hospital in South Africa since, local newspaper Haugesund Avis reported.

According to sources in his family and reports from local police, the Norwegian man was in a safari vehicle with five others when the car overturned. All six passengers escaped the accident relatively unscathed, but when the Norwegian began taking photos he was attacked by an elephant.

He was flown to hospital with critical injuries, and died last week, according to the newspaper.
