Tanzania will employ about 500 new wildlife conservation staff in the upcoming fiscal year to reduce the staff shortage at the country’s wildlife authority, Tanzania’s Daily News reported Monday (June 23rd).
Minister of Natural Resources and Tourism Lazaro Nyalandu said the government has already established the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TWMA), launched in May, which train skilled conservators.
“Employment of highly skilled wildlife conservators is important as we establish this authority whose vision is to become a centre of excellence in wildlife law enforcement. So it is crucial that we [are] deploying a workforce that meets this vision,” he said.
The addition of new wildlife conservators will alleviate the under-staffing of the wildlife protection sector, he said.
Tanzania announced a new anti-poaching strategy in co-operation with the United Nations Development Programme in May, which is aimed at establishing a long-term solution to the threats facing Tanzania’s elephant and other wildlife populations.
