A 55-year-old tuskerwas found dead near Burgur in Erode district of Tamil Nadu on Monday. Forest officials said the elephant died of intestinal worms caused by stomach infection.
Tribal people found the carcass of the elephant and alerted Burgur forest range officials.
“The elephant was suffering from intestinal worms and thus it stopped eating,” said forest ranger Balakrishnan. He said due to intestinal worms and infection, the tusker’s health condition deteriorated and it died.
A postmortem was performed, and the carcass was buried on the spot.
It is the third elephant death in the district in the last one month. An eight-year-old female elephant was found dead on the Moyar river bank on October 13. The elephant died of intestinal worms. On October 15 an 18-year-old female elephant was found dead in the Moyar river. It died after getting stuck in the mud.
