A wild female elephant was found dead at the Kadukumudy tea plantations of Talayar estate on the Munnar-Marayur road on Saturday morning. Tea estate workers passing through the plantation found it lying close to a rocky steep area by 9 a.m.
The elephant might have fallen to death slipping from the steep rocks, initial reports said. The plantation workers said that it was one of the three wild elephants seen in the plantation areas.
They informed the Eravikulam National Park authority. A team led by assistant wildlife warden Sandeep S. and Devikulam range officer Anoop Kiran reached the spot.
The estate is owned by the Woodbriar Group. The body was burnt after the veterinary surgeon from the Periyar Tiger Reserve conducted a post-mortem. Wild elephants frequent the plantations, mainly owned by Kanan Devan Hills Plantations at Munnar in addition to the agriculture lands at Marayur.
