PALAKKAD: Wild elephants from Mundur forest reached Mamkurissi, 25km away, creating more problems for the people and forest officials.
The forest officials said this was the first time the wild elephants have entered deep into the villages, creating scare among people.
In the early hours of Saturday, a herd of wild elephants with a calf moved from Mundur to Mamkurissi via Ayyarmala and attacked people and houses.
They damaged the compound wall of Sundari of Tharuvakode. The elephants camped in the house compound of Krishnakumar of Kurrat, creating scare in the area.
The elephants also destroyed agriculture crops, including paddy.
At Kakkode padasekharam of K K Sreedharan, the elephants destroyed one acre of paddy cultivation. In the nearby Tharuvakode paddy fields also the elephants destroyed crops.
The forest department officials, who came to drive away the elephants, had a miraculous escape on Saturday morning at Mankurissi as they were chased by the tusker among the herd.
Walayar, Malampuzha, Pudussery, Olavakkode, Mannarkkad, Attapadi, Palakkayam and Thenkara in the district are facing the problem of wild elephants entering human habitation, attacking people and destroying crops, resulting in the death of more than half a dozen people since January this year.
