The one-month-old elephant calf died in the camp at Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) in Nilgiris district on Sunday morning.
The calf was found lying in the jungles of Sirumugai in the district, left alone by its mother about 15 days ago and the Forest Department took it to the MTR Elephant Camp.
“The calf looked very weak when it arrived. For the past 15 days, we took good care of the animal by feeding it with milk and glucose,” forest veterinarian attached to MTR Dr Vijayaraghavan said.
The calf will be buried in the camp premises after a post-mortem. Preliminary reports of the postmortem revealed that it was suffering from heart-related disease and indigestion.
