IDUKKI: An estate worker was injured in an attack by a wild elephant at Chinnakkanal on Tuesday evening.

Kaliyammal (45) wife of Madaswami, a native of Chinnakkanal Thiruvalluvar colony, was returning from work when she found herself in front of the rogue elephant. Those who were with her said as it was a misty evening they did not see the elephant till it was too close. It grabbed the woman with its trunk and threw her away, they said.

Kaliyammal sustained injuries and was admitted to the Kottayam Medical College. Madaswami narrowly escaped with minor injuries. On Wednesday, a joint action council conducted a blockade at Chinnakkanal section forest office, demanding immediate steps by the forest department to curb the tusker menace in the area. The forest officials deployed a Rapid Response Team at Chinnakkanal and Sinkukandam.

On Sunday, a wild tusker entered Munnar-Udumalpetta inter-state highway, causing traffic block for more than an hour. The forest department had to deploy ‘kumki’ elephants to drive it away.

Meanwhile, following the death of a female elephant due to electrocution at Thachankari Estate, Devikulam range officer Nibu Kiran has issued a notice to ADGP Tomin J Thachankaris brother Tissin J Thachankari, the owner of the estate.
