On the 18th June 2011 Lucy King, our Chief Operations Officer, was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in Zoology from the University of Oxford. Lucy’s thesis “The interaction between the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) and the African honey bee (Apis mellifera scutellata) and its potential application as an elephant deterrent” gained much publicity worldwide and at a meeting in the Zoological Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn, Lucy was voted the winner of the UNEP/CMS Thesis Award 2011. The thesis is an emphasise on what Save The Elephants is doing to support communities living with elephants in our mission to develop a tolerant relationship between the two. An outstanding achievement!

The Thesis can be downloaded here. Her “Beehive Fence Construction Manual” – A step by step guide to building a protective fence for your farm to deter crop-raiding elephants can also be freely downloaded here as a PDF
