On the ecology and behaviour of the African elephant: The elephants of Lake Manyara

The first scientific study of the social interactions of the African elephant carried out by Iain Douglas-Hamilton in Lake Manyara National Park, Tanzania, from 1966-1972. From that study came Douglas-Hamilton’s hypothesis, rooted in behavioural ecology, that elephant movements could hold the key to understanding their reactions to their changing environments.
