Exploring seasonal variation in the faecal glucocorticoid concentrations of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) living in a drought-prone, anthropogenic landscape

The wide-ranging movement of African elephants is largely driven by the spatio-temporal distribution of water and forage, and often leads to their travelling outside of formally protected areas.

Summary

This study examines how African elephants in Kenya’s Tsavo East National Park adapt to seasonal changes in water and forage availability. Findings suggest that elephants are not significantly stressed by typical seasonal changes but further research is needed for extended drought periods. Privately protected areas like Rukinga Wildlife Sanctuary are crucial for conservation efforts.
