Every heavy rain, the Ewaso Nyiro River swells and eats a little more of the ground beneath the Samburu Research Camp, the very camp where Dr. Iain Douglas-Hamilton built Save the Elephants into one of the world’s most important research organizations.
What began as slow erosion is accelerating. When the river rises, it doesn’t just sweep away soil; it threatens the heartbeat of our operation. In 2010, floodwaters completely wiped out our base. Today, we face that same risk again.
We aim to deploy a complete, nature-backed plan to secure our base. We are planting deep-rooted trees that work with the land to bind topsoil, elevating our core buildings above high-water lines, and building reinforced structural barriers along vulnerable shoreline.
Help us save the camp before it washes away, so our researchers can stay focused on protecting Samburu’s gentle giants for decades to come.
